In the fall of 1999 the Rev. Evalyn Wakhusama, the second woman ordained to the priesthood in the Anglican Church of Kenya, came to New Haven, Connecticut to the Yale Divinity School to study for her Master's Degree.

During that time she was supported and sponsored by the Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien, CT, and worked as a part-time assisting priest at Christ Episcopal Church in Bethany, CT.

Completing her studies in 2002 she returned to Kenya. A charismatic and powerful spokesperson for the needs of the poor in Kenya, particularly in Western Kenya an area frequently neglected, her friends and colleagues in the United States sought to identify a long-term project that they could work on together with her.

In August of 2004 a mission team from the US traveled to Kenya to explore and identify projects to help destitute children, especially those affected by the HIV/ AIDS crisis. After many conversations and explorations, a decision was made to work with the Rev. Wakhusama on a school for destitute children.
